Time 59:34
Arriving at the studio past midnight ,I discovered, the mix was 7 minutes too long, so the tape splicing set had to come back in action.
Broadcast was at 2 PM, so with less than 2 hours to go, there was no time too lose. Using the mechanical tape length indicator on the tape deck, and a piece of paper to jot down the number of deleted seconds the mix gradually came closer to the length required. A couple of minutes before we had to go on-air the edit was ready.
Due to the mechanical nature of measuring, the mix was still a couple of seconds to long. Apparently impressed by this last minute edit, of a close to one hour mix, the Radio Technician muted the otherwise holy and absolute standard 5-second-countdown-beeps before the whole hour normally indicating the exact time. In doing so he gave me the last couple of seconds the mix needed.
What can I say............It was one of those moments.....
The last dance record of the evening in those years would either be:
Antonia Rodriguez : La Bamba,
Kat Mandu : The Break or
Gary's Gang : Showtime
All of which can be found in this mix.
Technical Details
The mix was transferred into the Akai DD1500 where minor level adjustments have
been made, as well as improving a couple of cuts. (remember, 83 84 85 86 87 and
the classics mix were originally edited on tape, and tape splicing is limited to changing
the splice angle for a somewhat smoother cut.)
In the DD1500 the additional tracks were added, and the ending was restored to it's original length.
Have a look at the studio back then, and how editing was done.

Reel to reel tape
The complete original mix didn't fit on one reel, and had to be transported in 2 sections.
The last 5 minutes of tape 1 were identical to the first 5 minutes of tape 2, and
whilst broadcasting I had to sync up the machines at the NOB (NOS at the time)
to make a very fast (and unnoticeable) live crossfade from tape 1 to tape 2.
Later these tapes were transferred to Sony F1 Digital, solving the live crossfade problem.

Background info
After gathering all the dance charts of the year, an initial list was made in the month
November. This list was sorted by tempo (BPM beats per minute) and on the 1st of
December, work was started on the mix. It took the full month of December to complete
and perfect the mix, usually working the last 72 hours in one stretch.
Reel to reel tape
These early Grandmixes were all edited on tape. Have a look how it was done.
As the edited tape was the final thing, each edit and crossfade not only had to be
rhythmically correct, but even more important , at the right volume level. The mix
would otherwise become louder and louder, resulting in overload and distortion.
I never liked limiters and compressors on final mixes, so the grandmix was also made
without them.
This mix was transferred from analog tape to the Sony SL-F1 prior to broadcasting.
(See also Reel to Reel on the '84 page)
TV appearance
The Grandmix 86 was also the first mix that made it to a TV show. Mixes started to become
mainstream gathering a steady growing audience. Ben Liebrand was the first DJ/Producer to
show on TV how these mixes were made. On the TV show "Tineke" Ben demonstrated how
tapeloops worked, synchronizing records to tape-looped rhythm patterns live on stage.
As Tineke was switching between to sets of Studio decor for each interview, Ben had 7 minutes
to install a mixer, turntables and a four-track tape recorder, including selecting a tapeloop, and
synchronizing the record "Broken Wings" to this loop, whilst hooking up his system to the
TV studio set-up. The difficult bit was to stay "cool" (temperature wise) when the cameras
switched on.

BACKGROUND INFO
Apart form the Annual series of Grandmixes (2000 - 2001 - 2002 - 2003 - 2004 - 2005 and soon 2006). There is also the series of Grandmix "specials" like the Disco 1 & 2, Millennium, Summer and 90's 1 & 2 Editions.
Timewise, this Grandmix fills in the gap between the "annual" series and the "specials" series. It also marks the change of sound in dance music. Where before productions where mixed according to traditional standards, taking care of levels and avoiding distortion, from the mid 90's the sound is being pushed more and more to the limit resulting in high sound pressure and accepting distorted, over-compressed and over saturated levels as a new style of mixing and mastering.
Where the audio industry welcomed 24-bit 96KHz as a final relieve from digital artifacts, Daft Punk uses those dreaded artifacts to create a trademark sound on tracks like "One More Time" where they go back to 8-bit samples or less. (As a comparison, CD's are in 16-bit 44.1 KHz). So now, anything goes but I did use a somewhat more hi-fi mix of Armand van Helden's My My My as the original pushes the levels way beyond what's sensible ;)
THE EVOLUTION OF DISCO
How would disco sound today if it never would stopped in the first place. It would probably still have the funky influences, vocals and that “4 on the floor” rhythm. Long intro’s and even longer breaks. But it would also be new. New Disco, Nouveau Disco, infused with stronger rhythms but with that same uplifting feel and the sole purpose to make you dance. So feel that energy and get on the floor. Ben Liebrand
